INNOCULATIONS

Much progress has been made in the area of vaccines. While the Havanse puppy is still with the breeder, your puppy will have gotten her initial vaccines. When you visit the veterinarian take the breeder shot record. Puppy vaccines are usually given at three-to four-week intervals. There are two categories of vaccines: core and noncore. The core vaccines protect against very serious diseases that are potentially fatal. They are rabies, distemper, canine adenovirus and parvovirus. The less serious noncore vaccines include parainfluenza virus, distemper-measles combination, bordatella, leptospirosis and Lyme disease. Many owners now are just having the core vaccines given and only with significant exposure is the noncore vaccine given. The vaccines given now provide three year immunity. Some feel that the Havanese are sensitive to vaccines and so not all the vaccines are given at once. Usually the rabies shot is last. Discuss this with your veterinarian and do have a yearly checkup for your dog.
